Chicago’s Most Popular Destination Celebrates 100 Years
With more than 50 acres of parks and gardens, a 196-ft ferris wheel and 9 million annual visitors, Chicago’s most popular tourist destination turns 100 this year – and we’re here to help celebrate!
Navy Pier opened to the public exactly 100 years ago today, and is now home to the Chicago Children’s Museum, Chicago Shakespeare Theater, Crystal Gardens, Funhouse Maze and more. Take a trip to Chicago this summer and enjoy everything the city – and this special landmark – have to offer.

PEPSI® Tall Ships® Chicago
All aboard! Prepare to “ooh” and “aah” as more than 15 majestic vessels dock at Navy Pier for the annual PEPSI® Tall Ships® festival, July 27 – 31. The event kicks off on the 27th with the Parade of Sail, where spectators can watch as these larger-than-life ships take course along the lakefront.
For the rest of the fest, guests can hop on board or even sail on one of the regal ships for a hands-on experience unlike any other. Check out the official site for times, ticket info, ship lineup and video clips!
Air & Water Show Cruises
From the windy skies to the wavy waters of Lake Michigan, the Chicago Air & Water Show is back! The Thunderbirds, Golden Knights, Leap Frogs and more will return to delight audiences from across the nation. Guests can watch along as parachute divers and fighter jets demonstrate precision in mid-air.
Although the focal point for this event is actually on North Avenue Beach, crowds, parking, and space accommodations can get pretty hectic. For this reason, Navy Pier has several different weekend cruises where you can relax and enjoy the show right from the water! Each cruise has an onboard DJ, delicious food and phenomenal views.
The Great American Lobster Fest
When you think “Midwest,” you don’t often think, “lobster.” But this event will have you changing your tune!
In its third year running, the Great American Lobster Fest is the largest seafood festival of its kind in the region – and the perfect farewell event for summer. Held over Labor Day weekend, the Pier has fresh, live lobster flown in from the cold waters of the East Coast and prepared any way you like it.
Featuring live music, family-friendly games, unique crafts, and even food options for your non-seafood-loving friends, what better way to end the season?
Centennial Wheel, Skating & More!
Not sure when you can make it out to the city? Great news: the Centennial Wheel is open all season-long! The new and improved ferris wheel, which opened just earlier this year, climbs almost 200 feet high and offers spectacular views of the city.
Afraid of heights? How about trying your hand at ice-skating…yes, in the summer! Skate by the Lake is a truly unique activity that lets you experience one of the best parts of winter without having to trudge through the snow to do so.
Both activities run under $20 per person – perfect for anyone on a budget. Or, you can also check out one of the many free concerts and plays going on throughout the summer.
After a full day in the city, you just might find yourself in need of some quality R&R. For your luxury accommodation needs, seek out Eaglewood Resort & Spa – Chicagoland’s premier resort.
