A Day-Cation in the Suburbs: Autumn in the Midwest is Here
From crunchy leaves on the sidewalk to pumpkin spice lattes, fall is definitely in the air! With the arrival of one of the most celebrated seasons in the Midwest, now is the most colorful time to plan your Chicago area fall getaway.
Check out these must-see attractions during your stay to make the most out of the season.
Goebbert’s Farm & Garden Center
Did you know that Illinois grows more pumpkins than any state in the entire country? In fact, 90% of the nation’s pumpkins in 2014 – 278,000 tons, to be exact – came from Illinois! So naturally, what better place to visit a pumpkin patch than right here?
One of our favorite local gems, Goebbert’s Farm, can be found just 20 minutes west of O’Hare. From mid-September through Halloween, Goebbert’s becomes an all-out fall fest with pumpkins, freshly baked apple cider donuts, pig races, and even a giraffe barn!
Goebbert’s is also a garden center, so be prepared to fawn over delicious farm-to-table sauces, jams, and honey – not to mention all the cute fall decorations.
With an easy drive north to the outskirts of Woodstock, you’ll find All Seasons Apple Orchard. Loaded with more than 15,000 trees, this nearly 30-year-old orchard is filled with multiple varieties of apples, including gala, honeycrisp, golden delicious, fuji, and even Asian pears.
A highlight every year at All Seasons is the corn maze, carved with two paths – one for youngsters, and one for adults. This year’s theme is the Super Mario Brothers, and it looks to be one of their most challenging ones yet. Be sure to let us know if and when you make it through!
32nd Annual Scarecrow Fest
Every year, families from all across Chicagoland compete (or spectate) in one of the largest scarecrow contests, the St. Charles Scarecrow Fest. With more than 100,000 attendees, this fest is definitely one for your must-see list regardless of whether or not you enter the contest (but if you do, the deadline is September 29th!).
Complete with rides, a petting zoo, live music, and an arts & crafts show, this 3-day event occurs over Columbus Day weekend, so the kids (and hopefully, you!) can get a little extra sleep on Monday after all the fun.
With so much to do, plan a long weekend for your Chicago area fall getaway right here at Eaglewood Resort & Spa! Families and couples alike can enjoy puzzle building in the lobby, pumpkin painting in the Market, relaxing facials in the spa, and even fall-flavored beverages & pastries. Book your bed & breakfast stay and enjoy a full buffet in the morning to fuel your festivities.
Fall never looked so good 🙂
